S.A.L.T. or "Senior and Law Enforcement Together"

S.A.L.T. is a council which leads to a broad dialog concerning the safety and security issues of our senior community.

Sheriff McCabe has helped raise money to stop closing of the Berkley Boys and Girls club. He has also made improvements to the facility, including painting and landscaping.

In 2001, Sheriff McCabe was named region director of the 16th annual Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics Virginia.

McCabe also formed the Citizens Advisory Board to keep Norfolk citizens informed of jail issues.

Norfolk Sheriff's Office 'Safety Print' Program — Provides free ID cards to all children in the community and to adults who have physical or mental challenges.

Project Lifesaver — Uses state-of-the-art technology to assist those who care for patients with mental health issues from the elderly with Alzheimer's to children with Autism.

The program fits them with wristwatch-like transmitters that emit silent pulses, which can be tracked with electronics equipment.

The Norfolk TRIAD Partnership — A partnership between the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office, the Norfolk Police Department and AARP to enhance the quality of life for senior citizens.

The Norfolk Sheriff’s Office CARE Program — A phone system that makes daily calls to home-bound seniors and other adults to make sure they are safe and sound.

Straight Talk from the Heart — A series of programs to show our youth the realities of the "real life" inside today's penal system. Through jail tours, one-on-one conversations with inmates and community involvement teams; the program works to redirect "at risk" youth and confront all participants with today's judicial system.

Norfolk Youth Football Camp — A free three-day camp where Norfolk middle school aged children learn football and life skills from the areas finest coaches. A number of current and former NFL players volunteer their time to mentor as well.

United Way — The Norfolk Sheriff's Office has been the largest contributing city entity to the United Way of Hampton Roads in the last three years.
